I believe it was Thomas Jefferson,(not sure, so do check) that said "the person willing to sacrifice liberty for security deserves neither" . No I would not, and will not willingly give up any liberties in the name of security, however though by the re-election of George Bush that is exactly what many Americans did. There were terrorist attacks before 911 and there will be terrorist attacks after 911, Terrorism isn't an enemy it is a tactic and therefore undefeatable, so now what happens, it is a perpetual war the government will use to keep the public in fear and wanting to be that way because the government tells them it is for their own protection, Republicans like to credit GWB with having no terrorist attacks since 911 would not suicide bombers in te Middle East be considered terrorist, with logic like that why not give him credit for the fact that no major hurricanes hit last year?

I remember during the Regan administration when the US declared "war on drugs", there is no way to track the amount of money wasted on this project but suffice it to say it is in the trillions of dollars and is still going on. Dare I say drugs are just as readily available today as they were during that day, so does that mean a bunch of drug addicts beat our government? I believe so. Whenever I our government want so limit our freedoms it declares war on something. (drugs, terror etc.)

The bottom line is the government is chipping away at our rights, freedoms and liberties and enough people do believe it is for their own good to allow them too. There will be other terrorist attacks in the future, it is a practice not an enemy so the government will continue to take away our freedoms if they are so allowed to. A true patriot must always be willing to defend his country against its government, and we ar guaranteed that right in the bill of rights, but GWB says questioning him and his administration as unpatriotic or cowardly, when in fact it is the mark of a true American. The government only has as much power as we give them and I feel we have given them too much. I don't want them listening in my (or your) living room just because I might be doing something dangerous. Where does it stop, reading mail, email, tapping phone calls(see operation echelon), community based spies like the KGB had? It is a dangerous world, always has been, always will be, but our government is making it more so.

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
