What has happened to the christian assertion that the "sanctity of marriage" is the backbone of America?

Have you seen the latest news on marriage in the United States?

First of all, divorce stats are almost right at 1 in 2. Virtually a 50% failure rate.

Today, this hit the news: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/na...

"Married couples, whose numbers have been declining for decades as a proportion of American households, have finally slipped into a minority, according to an analysis of new census figures by The New York Times. The American Community Survey, released this month by the Census Bureau, found that 49.7 percent, or 55.2 million, of the nation's 111.1 million households in 2005 were made up of married couples — with and without children — just shy of a majority and down from more than 52 percent five years earlier."

Christians can't even blame this on gays anymore, their big justification for blocking gay marriage. Is this waning institution really the backbone of America? Who can they blame this "marital decay" on now?

What has happened to the christian assertion that the "sanctity of marriage" is the backbone of America?
Marriage hasn't been sacred in ages. And the government should not be in the business of religious affairs. Let the religion handle the marriage, let the government handle the contract.
Reply:TRUE Christianity upholds the sanctity of marriage, as shown in the following article:

Reply:Marriage has enough problems already and is under extreme attack because a select few, a minority, have different opinions about what marriage should be. This isn't the first time this has happened, and won't be the last. Marriage, though, will stand. Report Abuse

Reply:this concept went " bye - bye "
Reply:Marital decay is the fault of society, the it's okay to be gay, and sleep with whoever, and hollywood divorces daily, the main ppl are to blame are in the marriage not trying to work it out and adultery ect
Reply:I don't know what you're so worked up about. Any sensible American can see the flaws in the Evangelical doctrine. Keep cool, my brother, keep cool.
Reply:Now christians are at fault for the failure of marriages? I blamed marriage problems on homosexual persons? I think unity, in all forms, should be the backbone of any nation. We are only as strong as our weakest link ( i know, it's me...)

I think the fault lies with pride in independence, selfishness, of the persons involved. Wanting what you shouldn't want, type stuff. Otherwise, marriage would be a historical tradition that fizzled out after everyone was made equal.
Reply:...and I suppose things would be so much better if we just forced those couples to stay together?

If you don't like divorce, don't get one.
Reply:The family and the church were both the backbone of America and America used to be a better place. Both institutions are now in turmoil, and as a result, America is in turmoil.
Reply:Nail on the head, my friend....it will be interesting to see the failure rate in gay marriages. Maybe when gay people get married they will mean it and stay together longer (or until death). Good for them.
Reply:God started with the marriage and He will end with the marriage. Satan knows this and breaks down the basic unit of society and God's basic principle of relationship between each soul and God Himself.
